First aid for human, animal bite injuries

When we were growing up, the only thing we knew then was that only dogs, cats and horses do bite. However, times are fast changing. It is interesting to note that some humans now bite.
On June 28, 1997, during the third round of a WBA heavy weight championship rematch between Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas, in the United States of America, Tyson spat out his protective mouth piece and bit off a chunk of Evander’s right ear, leaving a bewildered and mystified Holyfield bleeding profusely from the affected ear.
Since then till date, several other human bite incidences have occurred at different times.
The most recent occurred on June 24th, approximately three days ago, at the ongoing FIFA World Cup tournament, where a Uruguayan player of unquestionable talent but with unfortunate tendencies to bite, lashed out and sunk his teeth into the shoulder of Giorgio Chiellini, an Italian defender, during a match between Italy and Uruguay.
Luis Suarez may have bitten more than he could chew this time because football governing body, FIFA, has begun disciplinary proceedings on the incidence. He may face a worldwide ban of up to two and a half years for his latest biting incidence.
This is not Luis’ first biting incidence. In November 2010, he was handed a seven-match ban after biting PSV midfielder, Otman Bakkai. Again, on April 21, 2013, he bit Chelsea’s midfielder, Branislav Ivanovic on his left arm, and was handed a 10-match ban.
This story sounds funny, but it is real. In fact, the most interesting part of the story is that in all the incidences, there was no act of provocation from the victims. Biting was just an act borne out of frustration, stress and loss of self control on his part.
It’s not every day that you hear of a human being biting another. But Uruguayan soccer player, Luis Suárez, has shown us all that even mature humans occasionally bite others.
Infections through bites
Human bite wounds may not seem dangerous, but the risk of infection is higher because the human mouth contains higher levels of micro-organisms, which is introduced deep into the tissue by the teeth.
A review of 50 cases of human bites found an average of four infectious agents, and more than half of the infections contained Streptococcus anginosus, a bacterium in the same genus as that which causes strep throat. Nearly a third involved Staphylococcus aureus, the cause of most Staph infections.
According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, about 10 to 20 per cent of human bites become infected, and most bites and infections occur on the hand. In fact, about one third of hand infections come from bites. If not treated promptly, these infections can spread quickly and cause major complications.
Hepatitis B and C viruses can also be introduced into the body from a bite. Both affect the liver, and studies suggest that anybody who is bitten should be tested for Hepatitis B and C.
Herpes can be contacted from a bite. Several studies say this is possible since the herpes simplex virus is carried in saliva.
Rabies is caused by Rhabdo virus which replicates within the salivary glands, and it is transmitted through a bite.
Transmission of HIV through a bite is technically possible, though very, very unlikely. However, a case has been described in the Malawi Medical Journal of a woman getting HIV after being bitten on her lip by an HIV-positive sex worker during a fight.
Another incidence recorded was a case of a man getting HIV from his son after a fight — in which the HIV-positive foster son bit off the man’s thumbnail. Before that incident, it had been assumed that the HIV virus couldn’t be transmitted through saliva, since saliva inhibits the virus; but it does not appear to be true in every case.
First aid tips for bites
Once a person experiences a human-to-human, or animal-to-human bite, here are a few first aid tips that may be useful.
•First, calmly reassure the person. Wear latex gloves or wash your hands thoroughly before attending to the wound. Wash hands afterwards, too.
•If the bite is not bleeding severely, wash the wound thoroughly with mild soap and running water for three to five minutes. Then, cover the bite with antibiotic ointment and a clean dressing.
•If the bite is actively bleeding, apply direct pressure with a clean, dry cloth until the bleeding stops. Raise the area of the bite.
•If the bite is on the hand or fingers, call the doctor right away. Be prepared to tell your doctor how you got the bite. During your visit, your doctor will perform an examination. He will measure the wound, note its location, and check for signs of nerve or tendon damage. The doctor may order an X-ray and a blood test. In addition, he may give you a tetanus shot and prescribe antibiotics.
Please take every measure to prevent a bite incidence; and if it still happens, ensure you apply the necessary first-aid procedures.
Have a splendid weekend.

The badly decomposed body of an elderly woman has been discovered in her flat where she lay undiscovered for six years.
Anne Leitrim, who was in her 70s, had not been seen since 2008 and neighbours had assumed she moved out of the area because her home appeared empty.
Incredibly, two windows to the ground floor flat had remained opened in all that time.

Myntra set to launch fashion incubator

MUMBAI: The combined entity of Flipkart and Myntra will soon launch a fashion incubator, a first of its kind move by an Indian startup, in its aggressive push to gain complete dominance of the fast-growing online apparel category. In typical venture capital-style investing, the e-commerce combine will select fashion entrepreneurs, give them a platform to retail and after six months to a year pick up equity stakes for up to a million dollars in the best performing brands.

Startup incubators are widely run by large technology companies, to spot new ideas and talent, but this would be the first such attempt by an Indian e-commerce player.

Flipkart-Mynta will look to select at least 3-5 such brands annually which can later be retailed on other platforms- online and offline-- said a top executive from the company. The first batch of the incubator is expected to roll out in July which will get on board as many as 20 such entrepreneurs.

Eagles qualify for second round

Nigeria qualified for the last 16 of the World Cup despite losing 3-2 to Argentina in their final group clash in Porto Alegre on Wednesday.
Ahmed Musa drew the Super Eagles level twice after a brace from Argentina’s Lionel Messi but Marcos Rojo sealed victory for the South Americans in an exciting final Group F match of the 2014 World Cup in Estadio Beira-Rio to see both sides advance to the Round of 16 of the tournament.
Nigeria will meet former champions France in the second round on Monday.
The Eagles’ qualification was made possible after Bosnia defeated hard-fighting Iran, who had a chance of also advancing to the next round, 3-1, in the other group game.
Argentina have beaten Nigeria thrice in previous editions of the competition- 1994, 2002 and 2010- and they confirmed their superiority again in a game that marked captain Joseph Yobo’s 100th cap for the Eagles.
Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi started with the same team who began the match against Bosnia but it was Argentina who drew first blood in the third minute through the dangerous Messi.
Angel Di Maria’s effort at the near post beat Vincent Enyeama, hit the post, and then hit the back of the Nigeria goalkeeper before bouncing out to Messi, who smashed the rebound into the roof of the net.
But the African champions replied immediately, when Babatunde Michael embarked on a sizzling run from midfield before passing to CSKA forward, Ahmed Musa, who got the better of Pablo Zabaleta, before rifling home, giving Argentine keeper Romero no chance.
The South Americans piled on the pressure with Messi needing just a touch to Di Maria’s cross but the Barcelona man failed to make contact before Di Maria forced Enyeama to make a fantastic save from over 25 yards.
The two-time champions kept pressing for a second goal and it took a deflection from the impressive Juwon Oshaniwa off a Sergio Aguero’s shot to keep Nigeria on level terms in the 32nd minute.
Enyeama parried a Messi free kick in the 43rd minute and the Nigerians were punished for committing fouls close to their box, when Messi made no mistake this time around a minute later.
But it was Musa, who drew Nigeria level two minutes after the break when he latched onto Emmanuel Emenike’s long range pass between several Argentine legs before slotting past Romero.
Nigeria were behind again three minutes later from a corner kick, when the ball deflected in off Rojo’s knee after a header from Kenneth Omeruo failed to clear from danger.
Both sides played some exhilarating football afterwards with Musa close to getting his hat-trick 12 minutes from time after beating Zabaleta inside the box but the defender recovered quickly and blocked his shot.
Nigeria had a chance to draw level late on after Efe Ambrose found his way into the Argentine area but the right-back watched agonizingly as his shot was deflected for a corner kick three minutes from time.

Song gets three-match ban for elbowing Mandzukic

Cameroon’s Alex Song has been given a three-match ban for elbowing Croatia striker Mario Mandzukic.
The former Arsenal midfielder was sent off during Cameroon’s 4-0 defeat last week, incurring an automatic one-match ban.
But FIFA’s disciplinary committee decided that the nature of the offence meant the suspension would be extended to three games.
Cameroon are already out of the World Cup after two straight defeats. Song will therefore miss their final Group A match with Brazil on Monday night plus Cameroon’s next two international matches.
Cameroon were just 1-0 down in the 40th minute when the Barcelona star committed the offence.
A FIFA statement read: The FIFA Disciplinary Committee decided today to suspend Song for three matches and impose a fine of CHF 20,000 for breaching art. 48 par. 1 d) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
“The first match of this suspension is to be served in the upcoming World Cup fixture between Cameroon and Brazil on 23 June 2014, with the remaining two to be served at the next official matches of the Cameroon national team.”

BRAZIL 2014 WORLD CUP UPDATE

Defending Champion-Spain redeems image, defeats Australia 3-0

Spain bid farewell to Brazil 2014 and its reign atop the soccer world with a magisterial 3-0 victory over Australia.
The match meant nothing, as both teams entered with 0-2 records and no chance to advance. But the Spaniards, dressed aptly all in black, said a memorable goodbye with three lovely goals.
David Villa scored in the 36th minute, taking a centering pass from Juanfran and exquisitely backheeled it into the net. After scoring, he kissed the Spain crest on his shirt in what was probably his final international match.
In the 69th minute, another mainstay of Spain’s championship years, Fernando Torres, slotted home a shot when Andres Iniesta found him with a perfectly weighted pass into the area. Iniesta, playing his 100th match for Spain, also started the play that led to Villa’s goal.
In the 82nd minute, Juan Mata was left wide open six yards from goal to receive Cesc Fabregas’s searching pass. He knocked the ball softly through the legs of Australia’s goalkeeper, Matthew Ryan, who had little chance on any of the goals.
The Spaniards will now go home, but they have another throne to defend: They are the two-time defending champions of Europe. Their defense begins anew in September, as the qualifying campaign for France 2016 begins.

Netherlands top group B after 2-0 win over Chile
Leroy Fer’s second half header and a late strike from Memphis Depay fired the Netherlands to a third consecutive World Cup win following a hard-fought 2-0 victory against Chile.

Why I buried ex-customs official, daughter alive ─ suspect

The Lagos State Police Command on Monday paraded a 64-year-old native doctor, Alhaji Olatunji Azeez, who confessed to have killed a retired customs officer, Mrs. Angela Kerry, and her 10-year-old adopted daughter, Obiagulum, on May 10, 2014.
PUNCH Metro had reported on Monday that the decomposed bodies of the woman and her daughter were found in Azeez’s house in Ire Akari Crescent, Ajuwon Akute, Ogun State by operatives of the Lagos State Special Anti-Robbery Squad. The police subsequently marked the building as a kidnapper’s den.
Azeez, an Oyo State indigene with three wives and five children, said he was forced to kill the customs officer and her daughter after she threatened to kill him over a sum of money.
He explained, “I have been a trado-medical doctor for about 30 years, but I knew Angela over five years ago. She initially came to me for protection from family attacks. One of her friends called Lizzy introduced her to me. The relationship began to grow, and she kept patronising me for one thing or the other.
“Then, about three years ago, she mentioned her barreness problem, adding that the daughter that was with her was adopted. I was shocked. But when she told me her age, I told her it was impossible to make her pregnant. But she insisted that prophets in the churches she went had assured her she would get pregnant.”
Our correspondent learnt that Azeez later lied to the woman that she would get pregnant and collected N9m from her for the job.
Azeez added, “I did the normal concoction for her, but it didn’t work because of her age. But I collected the money because I knew if I did not, she would go to where they would collect it. After some months without result, she came to my place to complain. She then demanded a refund, but I told her that I could not repay it. She then began to threaten me. Within a month, I tried to repay N2.5m. On that fateful week, she came back for the remaining N6.5m.
“It was Saturday, May 17. She came with her daughter and insisted that she wanted her balance. She said as a retired customs officer, she could kill me if I didn’t pay back the money. Then I thought, I must kill this woman before she killed me. The hole at the back of my house was not built for killing. It was dug for drainage during rainfallss.”
Azeez added that he went to the backyard, covered the hole with a white cloth that Angela normally saw in another shrine in his house.
He said, “After we talked, we moved with her daughter to the place. I said she should kneel down on the mat with her daughter. She did so and fell into the pit with her daughter. The operation was successful because no member of my family was around in the house.
I then began to cover the pit up with sand. I poured in roughly 50 buckets of sand. The following day, I got two bricklayers to cement the portion. But I had first taken out the belongings she brought.”
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, stated that the police had concluded their investigations on the case, adding that the native doctor was going to be charged to court for murder.
He said, “The woman and her daughter were reported missing on May 10 at the Oko Oba Police Division by the family.
“Azeez was eventually arrested through a tracking device installed on the victim’s Toyota Camry. Azeez, an herbalist, had hypnotized the woman for a long time. He had taken over N200m from her both in cash and property. We discovered he cleverly constructed a well in his house, lured the woman with her daughter into the room, and buried them alive.
“We were able to recover the decomposed bodies of the victims from the well. We also picked their property which was buried along with them. We have finished our investigations, and he will be charged to court for murder. We will leave the rest to be decided by the court.”

Pupils in Lagos schools turn classrooms to porn Centres

Dressed in their neat uniforms and looking prim for school, children are adorable and most parents don’t know what theirs are capable of behind their backs.
A few weeks ago, while a science class was going on in a public secondary school in Ikeja, Lagos, a pupil was sighted at the back of the class completely engrossed.
The teacher, noticing that the source of the pupil’s attraction was hidden under the desk, she moved closer to the pupil, who was still lost in another world.
Upon closer inspection, the teacher found out that the centre of the pupil’s attraction was his smart phone, on which two objects were locked in steamy sex.
“I seized the phone and what I saw shocked me. He was watching a sex video while class was going on. He was later suspended for two weeks,” the teacher said, with a note of anger.
Investigation by Saturday PUNCH shows how pornography has become popular among public secondary school pupils in Lagos, thanks to internet-enabled phones.
Mobile phones have been banned among pupils in public secondary schools in the state. But that is only officially as pupils still go to school with their phones with the plan to hide them when their teachers are around.
Meanwhile, the popularity of pornography continues to grow on school premises with some pupils who interacted with our correspondent, describing the trend of watching porn videos and sharing them in school as “a normal thing” among them.
Interestingly, quite a number of male pupils admitted to visiting porn sites on their mobile phones. The trend is more common with male pupils, but some female pupils are now being influenced, according to the reports by school teachers.
At Oregun Senior High School, Ikeja, Lagos, a similar incident occurred a couple of weeks ago, when teachers were confronted with an awkward situation in the staff room.
One of the teachers had caught a pupil using his phone in class, also hiding behind his desk. The teacher seized the phone from the pupil only to realise that it had been locked.
On getting to the staff room and in the company of her colleagues, the teacher was finally able to unlock the phone, and the page that came up showed that the pupil had been watching a porn video in class.
The craze for porn videos in secondary schools seems to have hit a new high.
For instance, at Agidingbi Senior Grammar School, Ikeja, Lagos, a cross section of pupils estimated that up to 60 per cent of them were into watching porn, while at Ojodu Senior Grammar School, Ojodu, an estimated 40 per cent of the pupils had leaning towards it.
Largely, pupils get the porn videos by downloading them on their phones or getting them from colleagues willing to share.
A pupil of Agidingbi Senior Grammar School, Kayode Akinola, described pornography as very common among students in the school.
“Pupils download porn videos on their phones from the internet or get them by sharing with others via Bluetooth. Most times, during free periods or when a teacher is not in class, you see pupils gather round at the back of the class to watch porn videos on their phones.
“When they are watching the videos, you may hear comments like ‘this video is bad’ or ‘see how big this one (a private part) is’ and so on.”
Also, a pupil of Ojodu Senior Grammar School, Elizabeth Akpan, said that “boys usually make noise when they watch porn in class.”
Sources in schools say that only a few female pupils join their male colleagues in watching porn. Some female pupils who are too shy to openly watch porn videos favour what some of the pupils have described as equivalents, which include porn magazines and romance novels.
“Sometimes, it is when you collect a girl’s phone that you will see the videos there; they don’t go about showing them to people. In most cases, you tend to see more of nude pictures on girls’ phones than porn videos,” said a pupil of Ojodu Senior Grammar School, who identified himself as John.
Meanwhile, interactions with pupils from across different schools in Lagos show two categories of underage persons that fall into the habit of watching porn movies downloaded from the internet.
While one category of the pupils intentionally search for porn materials online, a second group innocently stumble on the materials online. Sadly, sources say that some of the pupils who fall under the second category get hooked and addicted to porn soon enough.
During our correspondent’s interaction with pupils from across different schools in Lagos, they reeled out over half a dozen websites as some of the famous destinations where they download porn videos without hassles.
Our correspondent visited one of the websites mentioned and found out that it offers a social utility service where various downloads, including songs, applications, e-books, nude pictures and porn videos could be done in less than five minutes.
To download a porn video, the website takes the visitor to its affiliate, which is strictly meant for such materials and the only hurdle put up to check that the interested party is not underage, requires that the visitor states that he or she is 18 years and above by clicking on a box to affirm the position.
Expectedly, pupils who admitted to have visited the porn site said they had no difficulty clicking that they had come of age.
“It’s really easy to stumble on the porn sites online even when you’re not looking for them, so the videos are so easy to get. My seven-year-old nephew who can browse (the internet) has stumbled on a porn site before and was asking me about the things he saw,” said Samuel Ojo, a 15-year-old pupil of Opebi Grammar School, Ikeja.
So far, the existing ban on the use of mobile phones by public secondary school pupils has failed to check the increasing but dangerous popularity of porn in schools. Pupils are able to escape being caught with mobile phones once they are put on silent mode and not used in the presence of their teachers.
In most of the schools, being caught with a mobile phone on the school premises attracts a penalty of two weeks suspension and a few schools also randomly search students’ bags. But none of the measures has effectively curbed the trend.
A teacher at Oregun Senior High School, Ikeja, who did not want his name published because he was not authorised to speak with journalists, has described the trend as a major threat to the teaching staff in the school.
Lagos State Government took a World Bank loan of $90m (over N14bn) about five years ago to improve education in its over 600 public secondary schools. Meanwhile, the Federal Government has just approved an additional N40bn World Bank loan for the state, to also be spent on education and infrastructure.
The source at Oregun High School said that more pressure has been put on secondary school teachers to justify the government investment in schools’ infrastructure.
He said, “But almost every week, we catch these pupils watching porn on their phones. Sometimes when we seize the phones and browse through in the staff room to see what the owners have been watching, we often realise that they are loaded with pornographic videos.
“This is one of the major things that don’t make the pupils concentrate in class. Such things distract the students and affect their performances. Meanwhile, the state government at some point was considering tying teachers’ salaries to their students’ general performance, not taking into consideration such distractions that we have no control over.”
A teacher at Ojodu Senior Grammar School said the school authorities were considering stiffer penalties for pupils caught watching or promoting porn on the school premises.
Currently, offenders in the school serve two weeks suspension and a week of additional punishment, which may require weeding and cutting of grass.
“We are considering introducing stiffer penalties because it’s easy to get addicted to porn and once a student is addicted, it becomes really hard to stop,” the teacher said.
The source suggested that telecoms companies should censor the use of the internet, particularly for underage persons, using the information supplied during SIM card registration.
The dangers
A professor of Education at the Lagos State University, Ojo, Demola Onifade, said the trend posed grave dangers to pupils.
According to him, one of the dangers is that adolescents are adventurous and like to experiment.
He said, “The chances are that they will want to practise what they see and that is the danger with adolescents. The other problem is that in practising it, they are exposed to so many dangers. They could contact sexually transmitted diseases and if not well treated, such diseases can ruin the future of some of them. For instance, a female pupil can have a problem with her ovary and be unable to bear children.”
Indeed, in some of the schools, pupils have occasionally been caught in pairs making out in secluded spots.
A teacher at Agidingbi Senior Grammar School recalled that the school “decisively dealt with a couple of pupils recently caught in compromising positions.”
“The male and female pupils were found kissing and caressing each other on the premises. They were called out during the assembly and flogged. In addition, they were suspended from school for two weeks. And that is not the only case we have had here,” he said with some measure of regret.
Onifade added that the trend could also sway students’ focus away from their academic studies.
“Whereas at that age, all they need is 100 per cent attention to their studies. Again, such pupils might influence their siblings negatively and it will be a vicious cycle,” he added.
Onifade called for stiffer control on the use of phones by underage persons, suggesting that computer laboratories should rather be provided for them in schools under strict monitoring by teachers.
He said, “As a matter of fact, I believe that secondary school pupils should not be allowed to use phones. If the pupils are able to sneak phones into the schools, it means that the authorities are not efficient. Schools can have computer laboratories and the use of the computers should be monitored by teachers. That way, pupils can’t do anything they like on the system.”
In his reaction, the President, Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria, Mr. Lanre Ajayi, suggested that government could “technically checkmate the issue by involving service providers.”
He said, “It will involve the service providers installing some filters in their systems, which will block the sites. But it will require extensive work and some privacy advocacy may also oppose it because they may consider it as infringing on the rights of people who want access to things that are of interest to them.”
Ajayi said that blocking porn sites for underage students alone would be “too complex because how do you know that the person using the phone is a pupil, except they are accessing the internet within their school premises?”
“In China, some sites are blocked, including porn sites and they are not accessible to their citizens. But where they are blocked, it won’t be limited to the students but to the general public. However, computers have softwares, which when installed, can limit or control the sites that users visit. There should be such softwares for mobile phones too.”
When our correspondent called the State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, a man who answered the phone on her behalf, asked our correspondent to see the ministry’s public relations officer for further direction.
“Come to the ministry and see the PRO, he will guide and direct you to who will talk to you. Thank you,” he said.
But in a phone conversation with Saturday PUNCH, the State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Lateef Ibirogba, said that government would change its strategy of monitoring school pupils to check the growing trend.
He said, “It shows that we should take a second look at the social media because it’s a reflection of the ills of the social media. We will look into it and change our strategy of monitoring the pupils because it shows that we need to monitor them more.
“We agree that children are adventurous, but they must not be exposed to such things and get distracted. We will up our game and curb the trend.”

I want all my son’s complete missing body parts – Mother of Lagos youth hacked to death

Mrs. Funke Abilesanmi’s eyes were blazing red. She had cried all day but one could only imagine the sadness and anger that filled her mind as she sat with her right hand supporting her jaw in front of 27, Mabawonku Street in Oworonsoki area of Lagos on Wednesday.
Just two days before, news had filtered to her that her son, 37-year-old Yemi Tayese, had been hacked to pieces by unknown assailants and dumped on the Oworonsoki highway.
A photograph of the victim’s body, which our correspondent obtained, was too gory for publication. But it was obvious some parts of the body were missing. The problem is, the mother of the victim is aware of this fact and this has become her current emotional torment.
Tayese’s body was removed by the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit on Saturday afternoon after some vehicles had run over the remains a few times.
No member of the family had the courage to walk up to the woman, to inform her about the death of her son, let alone the state of the body, the victim’s aunty, Mrs. Sulaimon Iyabode, told Saturday PUNCH.
Narrating how she heard about her son’s death, Abilesanmi said one of her relations, who had heard about Tayese’s death came to tell her that she needed to go to Oworonsoki, where her son lived because he was ill.
She said, “I told her that if indeed he was ill, the best thing was for him to go to his father’s house. I dismissed it as just a minor thing.
“But I noticed that she was crying as she left. I immediately knew something bad had happened to my son. I called another relation and pretended as if I had been told what happened. The person immediately started crying about Yemi being killed. That’s when I knew.
“Someone I did not know called me later and said Yemi was hacked into pieces and dumped on the road. I felt as if I had been stricken by a trailer by that news. I never imagined what grouse anybody would have with my son to make them treat him that way.”
The last time Abilesanmi saw her son was three weeks ago, it was learnt; a mother and son encounter that left no inkling that they were both parting forever.
Family members were around, pleading with the grieving mother to stop crying as she spoke but with each anguish-laden word, she burst into sobs.
She said, “I don’t have any case with whoever the police have arrested in connection with my son’s death. I just need his body back. Everybody connected with his death will die the way he has been murdered. I need my son’s body back complete. I heard they have removed his head and some parts of the body. I must get all his body parts back.
“I visited his apartment here (27, Mabawonku Street) three weeks ago. I was living here before but when I moved to Ikorodu, he remained. I was just surprised because he was still living in this area and I did not like that. I had told him before to move out of this rough area.
“I was surprised when I came here and he still had not moved out. He prostrated and told me that I should not worry that he had already packed his belongings and would move out soon. Our plan was that he would join his brother in Abuja. I left that day not knowing I was seeing my son for the last time. If only he had moved out of Oworonsoki as I had advised him, he would have been alive today.”
Saturday PUNCH spoke with some residents who claimed that they heard gunshots on Mabawonku Street the night Tayese was murdered.
One of Tayese’s friends who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he probably was the last person to see him alive.
He said he was with the deceased with other friends till about 12.30am on Friday night before they all retired to their respective houses.
“It is our habit to sit in front of this house and chat into the night before we all go to sleep. That day was not different. There was no sign that anything bad was going to happen.
“We all stood up and retired to our homes at the same time. What I do not understand is whether my friend’s killers went inside to kill him or called him outside.”
Tayese’s co-tenant, who said he was also chatting with the group outside the house before going to sleep, said he heard nothing, not even the gunshot that other residents of the street claimed they heard.
Our correspondent spoke with another resident who said she went out around 2 am later that night to urinate. Again, she spoke under anonymity for security reasons.
The resident, who lives opposite the house where Tayese resided, said, “I saw a man pushing a cart few metres away, the kind that water vendors use to transport jerry cans. I remember seeing clothes inside the cart because there was electricity supply on our street. I saw a shorter man nearby but the one pushing the cart shouted at me to go inside. In fear, I ran back inside.
“It was when news came in that a body in pieces had been found and identified as Utopia (Tayese’s popular alias) that I realised that what I really saw was a body, not just clothes. I later recollected that the cloth I saw in the cart was what I had seen Yemi wear earlier in the day.”
Residents say Tayese’s death is one in a series of violent murders in Oworonsoki in the last few weeks.
“In the last one month, three Oworonsoki youths have been killed in very violent manners,” a woman lamented.
An Oworonsoki youth leader, Mr. Babajide Kabiawu, told Saturday PUNCH that hoodlums now rob residents and motorists in Oworonsoki in broad daylight.
He said, “The last few months have been worse. We live in constant fear because some hoodlums, who wear black masks, run around the community to rob and attack people anytime they like.
“These hoodlums know that the police division here cannot handle them. This is why we need a police patrol vehicle or armoured personnel carrier permanently stationed here. We are sure that would reduce the criminal activities here.”
Kabiawu said the terror regularly unleashed by criminals in the area has become overwhelming for residents.
Our correspondent visited the palace of the traditional ruler of Oworonsoki, Oba Oloruntoyin Saliu, to get his comment about residents’ concern on security in the area but he was said to be out of the country.
Prince Muyideen Saliu, who spoke on his behalf, said the reports gathered by the palace suggested that Tayese might have been a victim of reprisal by friends of a youth that was stabbed to death few weeks earlier.
He said, “A couple of weeks ago, a youth was stabbed to death by a young man said to be a friend to Yemi (Tayese). It is believed that his killers are friends of that stabbed victim. The palace is working with the police to ensure this does not degenerate into more reprisals and counter-attacks.
“The Oba has done a lot to ensure that Oworonsoki does not return to its former state of anarchy. There was a time when Oworonsoki was a base for criminals but that has been changed by our traditional ruler. Residents also have the responsibility of reporting suspicious activities on their streets to the security agents.”
Spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Ngozi Braide, said a tight security arrangement is in place in Oworonsoki but added that the residents should be forthcoming with more credible and viable leads about hoodlums living in their midst.
She said, “People cannot expect the police to do everything about security because the supposed criminals are living among them. They need to provide us with good information we can act on.
“If they had reported the activities of criminals in the area to the police at Oworonsoki, I am sure the divisional police officer would have handled the matter urgently because the police is a responsible force that does not joke with information.”
